"How To" Video (69) 8-22-12

Each week I try to post something other than my own image, but that still is germane to street portraiture. This has happened to fall on Wednesdays, so I guess that I’ll make it a tradition.

Photographers often shun street portraiture. This is usually not because the photography itself is difficult or complicated – it is neither. It is because walking up to strangers and interacting with them is daunting and intimidating. It certainly has been for me, a natural introvert.

In this youtube video, photographer Jimmy Hickey explains his process for getting past this fear and photographing strangers. The more that we hear how to deal with these thoughts and feelings, the better off we (street portraitists) are. It is hard to overstate how helpful repetition and reinforcement can be.
