Elias (#93) 9-20-12

I met Elias in Ketchikan. He was a docent in a salmon hatchery, and seemed well versed in the life cycle of salmon and the two bald eagles that had been injured in fishing nets, and had become permanent residents. Interesting factiod: adult bald eagles reach around 14 pounds, and can fly with fish about ½ their weight in their talons. If an eagle grabs a heavier fish, it cannot (will not?) let go, and dies.

Anyway, Elias is a member of the Haida nation of Native Americans, and was born in Washington state. His family moved to Alaska so that his father could get work as a hunter. One of his parents is Tlingit – the TL is pronounced CL, and both nations , along with Tsimshian and Eyak peoples live in Southeast Alaska (see map). They are not Eskimos.
